We love our library. And we're doing everything we can to ensure it remains as relevant to our community today as it was when it first opened over 100 years ago. We take heart that there are numerous groups, societies, government departments, unions, campaigners, and library associations that share our vision. They have issued guidance for libraries transitioning to community-owned status; provide suggestions for making best use of library resources; and challenge us to think what else a library can be.

The Carnegie Chess Club was established by Edward Ochagavia in 2000 when the Library was under threat of closure. He was keen to make the library not just a place for books but also to bring people living in the area together socially and stave off the threat. He learned to play when he was growing up in the Soviet Union where chess is almost a way of life and wanted to pass on his enjoyment of the game.
